Latino actor, Benicio Del Toro wins Oscar award for role in "Traffic"

March 26, 2001 - Puerto Rican born actor, Benicio Del Toro won an Oscar Award last night for "Best Supporting Actor" for his role in "Traffic."

In the movie, Traffic, Del Toro plays an honest Mexican policeman from Tijuana fighting powerful drug traffickers. A role that also earned him a best leading actor award from the Screen Actors Guild.

During his acceptance speech, Del Toro dedicate his Oscar to the locations where the film was shot, Nogalas, Ariz., and Nogalas, Mexico. "As an actor, the location is so important and the people were so humble, so beautiful that it really made it easy for me to get into it," Del Toro said backstage. "And I think it helped all the actors and I think it helped the film."

This was Del Toro's first Oscar nomination and he beat out actors Jeff Bridges, Willem Dafoe, Albert Finney and Joaquin Phoenix for the award. Del Toro is also the second actor to win an Oscar for a role performed primarily in a foreign language. Robert DeNiro won for his mostly Italian part in "The Godfather II."

Traffic was also nominated for "Best Picture of the Year" along with "Gladiator," and "Crouching Tiger", but it was "Gladiator" that took home the big prize of best picture.

Traffic also won a total of four Oscars including one for "Best Director" and "Best Editing".
